I've already passed it on to the Professors and Instructors here, and will definitely be mentioning it to students.
Thanks for not just showing what you do, but for making it understandable, informative, and in-depth... |

Awesome!
Nino,
You have really created something awesome. You have used pictures that explain what each light does and explain it very well.
Thank you.

Just breezing through it before going to work.... looks pretty cool. So many photogs in the business these days can't even set up a simple light plan. Maybe this can help bring some of the art back to the craft. |

Wow! As I go through your chapters, I think, "would I have had the foresight to pick a backdrop like that?" You are good, man, real good. I really appreciate the effort put into this website. It is answering questions I have had for many years. |

Just fantastic of you to do this for the rest of us.
I am often challenged by light, I'll admit it, and this may help solve my issues. I cant wait to start playing with some of these techniques.
Again, thanks. |

folks - you really should check this site out. its amazingly well done and illustrates things with extreme clarity. this really shows how the 'big dogs' do things.
it shows some pretty advanced setups - and some people out there may want to downplay this by saying "i don't have 10x10 silks" or "i don't have ONE chimera, let alone any HMI's" - but don't be scared. if you look at what is being explained, its mainly THEORY - but it IS coupled with PRACTICE. stuff you can do if you happen to have the same or similar tools.
if you take the theories that are presented here, and adapt them to your own, personal toolbox of lighting gear, you will raise your game for sure.
if you go one step more and actually purchase some of the things that nino has found helpful over the years, you'll advance even more. you'll notice that he isn't scared to show his tricks. |

I would love to see a section on live shot lighting. Lighting with the basics, ie a couple of 250 pro lights.
The site looks great.
Thanks |

I really enjoy this site. It will be a great resource that I will use. I am just a student starting out learning the tricks of the trade and it is nice to have something like this to refer to if I need to. I have learned some of this stuff and it is always nice to see some different ways of doing lighting. I will let other students know about this and instructors. Thank you again for creating a web site like this. |

Outstanding site! As a still photog who just lurks here looking for info that applies equally well to video or still shooting, I have to say I am very impressed, and many of your techniques easily apply to still photography.
The truly accomplished individual is one who is not afraid to share his knowledge with others and you, sir, are the consummate pro. |

Nino, Thank you so much for sharing your wealth of knowledge, experience and obvious love and pride in what you do. It is people like you who "give back" that make this industry great to work in. The principles and setups you show on your new site are something any visual artist can learn from. My only request is to echo what a couple other folks have said: Give us one page showing some creative run-n-gun setups that take 10 minutes and use a couple Totas or Omnis like most of us at TV stations use. Some photogs might have an easier time getting their heads around these ideas if they see familiar instruments being used in new ways. Once again, thanks so much. |

Fantastic!
Nino,
Yes....finally this webpage exists!! I also really appreciate your work on the site. The diagrams are especially useful for geometrically-challenged people like myself! The pictures are perfectly labelled and explain everything---you really should consider a teaching career in videography if it's something that interests you.
I second or third the idea to include more ENG-type lighting for news with tight deadlines. I'll certainly try to use some of the principles you've explained, but I'm only ever able to have 2 lights on me at the most when I'm in the field. Not to ask for "shortcuts"...but something to explain "lighting to deadline" would help me even more.
Thanks again! Great work. |

Nino, it’s been my belief that if I can do something to improve the standard of work out there, be it through training or talking on b-roll or whatever, if it was good for the industry long term it was good for me. You’ve out done me by a mile. The amount of work and thought you have put into this amazing resource is just awesome. Congratulations!!!

Nino this is just great! I learned a lot on my first visit. It's like getting to do an apprenticeship with a pro--online!
Looking forward to your additions in the future. Maybe you could add the wattage of the bulbs used in the demos on the site, but thats the only thing I can think of.
Thanks so much! |

Wow, what an awesomely useful site! The information is extremely well laid out and presented. Even shots of the gear is professionally lit and photographed. Please give our compliments to Nino for taking the time and being gracious enough to share his knowledge, and for free no less!
The only thing I can suggest is to give us even more, but it looks like he's already planning to in the future topics. |

Yes indeed a great site. I'll second the idea that the info, the way it's presented on the website is great and would be great in a book. Untill then I think I'll just print the webpage and stick that in my bag...
Thanks again for the link...

What an excellent document! Well done. I've just checked out the start of it, but I've learned something already and it's so straight forward and easy to understand. I'm doing an interview Wednesday with a figure skating legend and I can use some of these techniques. I want to go out and buy two more lights now, but I think I'll go with what I have for the time being. I'll pass these on to the local production group to which I belong. Thanks for this, very much.

Well done, it's brilliant - excuse the pun.
I'm in the process of creating a site containing links to useful sites such as this, so I hope you don't mind me including it.

Mike - This is EXCELLENT!!! It reminds me of the days when I was lugging all my customized portable lighting gear when working in Magazine/Photojournalism. This is an excellent resource as I have wanted to carry over those skills I developed from still to video, but didn't quite know how - now I have the resource to do just that.
Thanks for the link!

Thanks Mike! Just picked up some more "angles" on lighting from that site. I liked the actual clear "analysis" pertaining to the Old Masters.

Thanks for the link Mike. I admire him for doing all that work to help others in the field.
My favorite was the section on outdoor lighting. That is the look I like when shooting people.
I really dislike the look of what is supposed to be good indoor lighting for people. It makes people look UGLY to my eyes because of the shadows and contrasty effect, but I think I am in a small minority when it comes to that opinion.

That is great. It is the best presentation on sports set up I have seen on a free site. My students have loved it. I have one in particular that has dreams of shooting for ESPN.
Thanks again,
John

Lighting, no matter what the subject type, drama, or interview for current affairs etc, needs to be motivated. What Nino is doing is showing the basics. Once you know how to do perfectly lit shots you can then start ripping apart the rules and making things more natural, off the wall, etc, but still have 'good lighting'.
Sometimes the lighting style is determined by the network or show that has hired you. They demand a certain look.

Excellent site! Bravo- extremely well done, very professional, and I am learning a lot... perfect timing, as I needed to learn how to light 2-cam interviews... this is a great site - thanks for the reference!

Nino's pages are a great resource and I hope he adds to them. Bob and John, the portraiture tutorials are designed to really show the lights and as such they look "lit". Although you'd be hard pressed to stray from the basic points, you can do a lot with this to make it look natural or dramatic, depending on your needs. In fact, you can make it look completely unlit with the same general layout.
The main points are to provide a source that illuminates the face and pulls the viewer's focus there. From there on you shape the face and populate the background. It's the same drill for film, video, stills, everything.
This is just portraiture and it's the thing for anyone who wants to learn to light to start with.
What's more challenging, and I hope he writes articles about it, is lighting for people moving through space. This is an area where the DP really needs to understand process, like blocking a shot, setting marks, all that stuff. And in these situations you usually don't end up with such formal portraits.

Thanks for sharing the link. I took a media aesthetics class in college once, and I remember walking away totally filled with interesting knowledge and how-to's. This web site brought back a lot of those otherwise forgotten factoids. Thank you.
